Food Processing Industry Environmental Problems and Solutions

With rapid population growth, the world population will reach 10 billion people by 2050. This means that there is a need to increase food production to feed the future generation, but not at the expense of the environment. Feed supply is one of the major issues facing food processing industries. The whole process of raising cattle and poultry requires huge acres of land to sustain. Vast hectares of land have to be cleared, leading to loss of biopersity, soil depletion due to the additional use of fertilizers as well as increased levels of carbon pollution. Therefore, the food processing industry plays an important role in contributing to a range of environmental issues.
Sustainable policies are needed when it comes to feeding the world. One of the reasons why HMA has a big name in the market is the sustainable methodology they followed. A huge planting campaign is carried out every year by HMA which aims to plant at least 2 million trees by 2030. Therefore, the reforestation policy will further meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) No. 13 , namely climate change and UN SDG 15. , which is life on earth.
“The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) now allows countries to earn carbon credits for planting trees. HMA has already planted over 65,000 trees, which will function as carbon sinks and hence contribute to India’s carbon credit appointment,” said Mr. Gulzair Ahmed, Director and Chief Financial Officer of HMA.

Wastewater treatment system
When cattle are processed, their blood, fat, etc. generate huge amounts of waste water, because the whole process is water-intensive. Process water from slaughter, as well as cleaning, contains huge amounts of animal waste like surface grease, hair, blood, etc. In the first stage, HMA treats the wastewater through the pre-treatment system, which consists of removing more and more solid waste and separating the oils and greases from the water. Next comes the most efficient and robust biological treatment technique for the removal of organic load and nitrogen from water. During the anaerobic biological treatment process, the carbon in the wastewater is transformed into biogas, which is used to generate electrical energy.
Additionally, HMA shared their wastewater minimization techniques. HMA mentioned that the amount of waste water generated is reduced by commercially available high-pressure hoses and the use of self-closing valves. They even mentioned the optimized use of detergents and disinfectants in the wash water. HMA contributes to the horticulture sector, which provides raw materials to agro-processing industries and plays a vital role in the Indian economy. HMA plans to produce environmentally friendly solid and liquid fertilizers in the future.
